Initially, Rio Grande made the decision not to join Amtrak in May of 1971. From that time until April of 1983, the beautiful equipment of the original California Zephyr made a tri-weekly run from Denver to Salt Lake City, following the route made famous by the original train "through the Rockies" and along the Colorado River. I went to East Portal in 1983 to photograph the final Westbound run of that train. This locomotive has been preserved at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden and has been cosmetically restored to new condition. The route can still be traveled in Amtrak's version of the California Zephyr, photos are elsewhere on my site. |
